SPECIAL PROGRAMS

The mission of Title X Homeless Education is to remove barriers to school enrollment and provide stability in school for students experiencing homeless living situations and to ensure that homeless students have the same access to all educational opportunities as students with permanent housing.

Educational Rights of Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness
WHO QUALIFY:

  • Students who are doubled up, sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic  hardship
  • Students living in motels, trailer parks or campgrounds due to the lack of alternative accommodations
  • Students living in emergency or transitional shelters
  • Students who are living in cars, parks, public spaces or substandard housing
  • Students who are unaccompanied, living without their parents
  • Migratory students who qualify as homeless because the students are living in circumstances described above

RIGHTS:

Children & youth experiencing homelessness have the right to:  

  • Go to school, no matter where they live or how long that they have lived there
  • Continue in the school that they last attended before becoming homeless 
  • Receive transportation to the school they last attended 
  • Enroll in school without giving a permanent address 
  • Enroll & attend classes while the school arranges for the transfer of immunization records    or any other documents required for enrollment

These rights are established under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
Title X, Part C of The No Child Left Behind Act


Service to homeless students/families includes:

  • Enrollment assistance
  • School Supplies
  • Access to donated school clothing/shoes
  • Information/help with transportation to and from school
  • Referrals to numerous community resources
  • Connection to school-based supportive services
